OUR FAB WHITE BRITISH SOUL DIVA:
Yes she did lots of versions of original material by American black Soul artists BUT she was simply fantastic, wasn’t she. YES WE ARE BIG BIG FANS.
The English soul diva, she was full of genuine soul yet always doubting herself and apologising to the black artists that she admired for attempting their genre. In fact she was fantastic. Her records were played at Manchester‘s soul clubs in the 1960’s and at all the other clubs too.
She was born: Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien on the 16th April 16 1939, Hampstead, London. She would become the White Negress a title bestowed on only two white soul singers. As a matter of fact had similar appearances – the other was Chris Clarke.
She began her career as part of the Springfields – a pop folk trio in 1960, together with with her brother Dion O’ Brien and his friend Tim Field.
What’s It Gonna Be was a huge tune at Manchester’s Blue Note Club.
Dusty was undoubtedly the greatest ever British female soul singer.
