Christine Quaite was an English girl singer very much in the mould of Helen Shapiro being young, Jewish and having a powerful voice. Sounds familiar? She also gained her first success at the age of thirteen when she came second in a talent contest that won her a recording contract with Oriole Records. Amy Winehouse was following in a long tradition of Jewish girls with deep soulful voices. She doesn’t appear on Wikipedia and we have no idea where she is today – a pity.
Her success was not confined to the UK and she did well in the US. For the full story, see the excellent Spectropop link.
Her version of Jimmy Radcliffe’s great song is a Northern Soul collector’s item.
